St.-Petersburg, 22.08.2014 A solemn ceremony of raising the Navy flag on the big diesel electric submarine of project 636.3 with pennant number “B-261” “Novorossiysk” took place at JSC “Admiralty Shipyards”.

The Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation Sergey Shoygu, Acting Governor of St.-Petersburg George Poltavchenko, President of JSC “United Shipbuilding Corporation” Alexey Rakhmanov attended the solemn action.

The special importance of event was emphasized by the RF Minister of Defence Army General Sergey Shoygu: “The building of powerful and effective Navy is one of our priorities. We will further only increase the pace of development of the Navy. And the construction of submarine “Novorossiysk” of modernised 636 project is a clear confirmation of that”.

Mr Alexander Buzakov named a solemn ceremony of flag raising the long-awaited event for all personnel of the shipyard: “It is symbolical that building of submarine “Novorossiysk” is marked at once by several anniversaries. The submarine was laid in the year of the 65th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War.  Her launch last November has opened the 310th anniversary year in the history of Admiralty Shipyards. And her commissioning to Navy fleet is on the day of the 150 years anniversary of the Western military district. All these dates is a plain evidence of the preservation of better traditions of the Russian fleet and the Russian shipbuilding».

Submarine “Novorossiysk” of project 636.3 is the first in a series under construction at JSC “Admiralty Shipyards” for the Russian Navy. She was laid in August 2010. The submarine construction laid the foundation of implementation of the long-term program of the Ministry of Defence of Russia on restoring the combat readiness of the Black Sea fleet and the program of improvement of diesel electric submarines for the Russian Navy.

All six ships of the series today under construction at JSC “Admiralty Shipyards” are named in honour of the cities bearing honorary title “City of military glory”. In June 2014 the second ship of a series “Rostov-on-Don” was launched. Now she is successfully undergoing the dock trials. On 28 August the third ship “Stary Oskol” will be launched. A solemn ceremony of laying down the fourth submarine — “Krasnodar” took place on 20 February this year. In October two more ships “Velikiy Novgorod” and “Kolpino” will be laid. Building of all series is progressing according to the contract.

The submarines of modified project 636 have a higher combat effectiveness (compared to the previous projects). The optimum balance of acoustic stealthiness and target acquisition range, the latest inertial navigation complex,  up-to-date computerised information control system, powerful quick operating torpedo and missile systems will give the global priority to this class of ships in the conventional submarine shipbuilding. Admiralty Shipyards is an undisputed leader in building of submarines of such class and has been successfully delivering them for export since 1983.
