I would like to thank you, shipbuilders, who are constructing nowadays the submarines with such reliable decks, which enable us to defend our Motherland confidently and properly.”

– “Not by accident that today we have gathered together just here in Sestroretsk right on the spot where in 1724 the “hidden or secret vessel”, built by employed of Main Admiralty Efim Nikonov, underwent testing”, – so Nikolay Suzdaltsev, an honored shipbuilder of JSC “Admiralteiskie verfi” and a submariner veteran addressed to the participants of the rally. – “This event holds a special place not only in the history of our shipyards but also in the history of naval engineering. It was then when for the first time ever autonomous manned submersible, equipped with flood gate and armed with incendiary rockets, was fabricated and tested.”

After completion of the rally, its participants laid flowers to the “Wall of Memory”, on which are fixed commemorative plaques with names of 180 sunken submarines.

Domestic submarine shipbuilding originates from the time of Peter the Great when in 1718 Efim Nikonov, a carpenter and a worker of the Main Admiralty, gave his petition to the tsar, offering to build “firing hidden/secret vessel”. The construction was carried out at a workshop on Galerniy Island. During testing of the vessel in Sestroretsk, the “hidden vessel” was submerged three times, but in a diving the vessel was damaged.

Prototype of the 1st submarine, built at “Admiralteiskie verfi”, predetermined the current trend of activity of Russia’s oldest shipbuilding yard, which presently is considered as acknowledged center of conventional submarine shipbuilding. JSC “Admiralteiskie verfi” started series production of submarines in 1932. Currently over 400 submarines and deep-water vehicles have been built by the yard.
