JSC «ADMIRALTY SHIPYARDS» LAID DOWN A PATROL ICE BREAKER «IVAN PAPANIN»

The multi-purpose ice class patrol ship of project 23550 «Ivan Papanin» was laid down at JSC «Admiralty Shipyards» (a subsidiary of the United Shipbuilding Corporation). The Commander-in-Chief of Navy of the Russian Federation Admiral Vladimir Korolyov and Deputy Director General of JSC «Admiralty Shipyards» Andrey Bystrov participated in the solemn ceremony.

«Today we are present at an outstanding event of laying down of up-to-date ice class patrol ship, addressed to the participants of the solemn ceremony Deputy Director General of JSC «Admiralty Shipyards» Andrey Bystrov. – JSC «Admiralty Shipyards» has always been a site for construction of high-tech knowledge-intensive ships of a new type. The today's laying is a visual continuation of the tradition. We have no doubts that the new ship "Ivan Papanin" will be constructed within the timeframe of the contract and with a high quality».

The Commander-in-Chief of Navy of Russia Admiral Vladimir Korolyov called laying of the new ice breaker an important event in the history of Navy and military shipbuilding. «This is a unique multi-purpose ship much needed for the Navy. This year will be celebrated exactly 80 years of first drifting station «North Pole». Undoubtedly, that construction of the new ice class patrol ship will become a new phase in this direction. We are sure that the shipbuilders of renowned JSC «Admiralty Shipyards» once again will successfully solve all the assigned tasks».

The multipurpose ice class patrol ship of project 23350 «Ivan Papanin» designed by JSC «CDB Almaz» will integrate functionality of a tow boat, a patrol ship and an ice breaker capable of breaking ice with a thickness up to 1,5 m. It belongs to the advanced developments for a benefit of the Navy.

The contract for construction of a series of two patrol ice class breakers was signed on April 25, 2016. The construction of the prototype started in September of 2016. The prototype ice class patrol ship «Ivan Papanin» will be commissioned to the Navy of the Russian Federation after 2020.

The ship is designed for protection and monitoring of the Arctic water resources, convoying and towing of detained vessels to a port, escorting and support of supply vessels, participation in rescue operations, transportation of special cargoes, besides, for independent artillery strikes on sea, land and air targets. The new multitask vessel is capable to perform the tasks effectively in the Arctic zone both on its own and within groups (squadrons) of combat ships and execute escort functions on the Arctic routes. The main specifications: displacement about 8500 tons; length about 110 m; width about 20 m, draft about 6,0 m; speed about 16 knots; crew / additional crew about 60/50 persons; endurance about 60 days with unrestricted navigation. The fighting equipment: automatic artillery mount AK-176MA; a helipad and a helicopter hangar for basing of a helicopter and unmanned drones; two fast attack crafts of type «Raptor».
